The album was produced by the famous Max Martin, the new co-author of the band's discography. The idea of creating a space-themed album has been hatched by the group since 2010, when vocalist Chris Martin proposed a project for the construction of the "Solar System".
The album takes place in a fictional planetary system called Spheres, which consists of nine planets, three natural satellites, one star and a nearby nebula. Each track on the album represents a celestial body from The Spheres. Each celestial body in the Spheres has its own language.
The album includes 12 tracks in total, including duets with BTS, Selena Gomez, Jacob Collier and We Are King.
